Internet2 Roadmap

You spoke, we listened. Internet2 gathered community input to improve our services to the research and education communities to develop the Internet2 Roadmap in 2022/23.

By applying what was learned from listening, Internet2 improved its service to the research and education community over the past few years. As of April 2026, we have completed the objectives for infrastructure and services, convening, collaborating, and partnering, and innovation and transformation.

Our Path Forward

Internet2 received valuable input the Internet2 Roadmap project — an ongoing effort to reflect stakeholders’ commitment to strengthening Internet2’s services, solutions, and capabilities.

This feedback enabled Internet2 to improve its service to the research and education community. From this input, Internet2 has completed objectives on three strategic priorities.

Provide access to information and resources important to the R&E community via intuitive, robust, secure, intelligent, and ubiquitous infrastructure and services.

As of April 2026, we have completed these Infrastructure and Services objectives that Internet2:
- Improve the Internet2 Website to ensure content and relevant information is easily discoverable
- Expand Cloud Connect to the seven interconnect locations and RPI network-wide
- Enhance International Connectivity

Advance opportunities to convene, collaborate, and partner with a wider array of research and education institutions, the regional networks that serve them, affiliates, and the private sector industries that deliver solutions.

As of April 2026, we have completed these Convening, Collaborating, and Partnering objectives that Internet2:
- Continue its critical role of facilitating collaboration and engagement opportunities and design enhanced onboarding opportunities.
- Update InCommon’s branding and messaging
- Continue to develop partnerships with technical and special interest groups

Work in unison across the Internet2 community to explore and implement innovative transformational capabilities to help shape the future of R&E.

As of April 2026, we have completed these Innovation and Transformation objectives that Internet2:
- Target Artificial Intelligence offerings. It is a key innovation and a common challenge for many institutions.
- Continue to develop an Open Science and Big Data Working Group.
- Prioritize Security, Compliance, and Risk Management. A working group drafted an RFP/RFI to send to third-party risk management services in early 2024
