This is the problem though—accounting for abuse and your community's safety IS "making the damn thing work" in the early stages of building tech.

Best analogy I've heard is building a plane in mid air to refuel the other plane you're also building in mid air. Huge props to the team. What we announced today is just the first iteration. Very excited for all the features the new authorization service will soon allow. 🎉

This past weekend, I excavated the first (useful) code I ever wrote from my old TI-83. Want to complete the square (with work shown), find the record needed to break at a debate tournament, or the minimum score on a final to get an "A"? It's now on GitHub!

Had a free domain, so spent some time giving my Word (or Google Doc) to Markdown converter some love (including a shiny new privacy policy for transparency). Please enjoy the recently re-homed for all your word-to-markdown converting needs. 🎉

User experience is important, even when your customers are internal. Sufficiently bad corporate IT systems are increasingly indistinguishable from even rudimentary phishing attacks. Let thoughtfulness and care be your first (last?) line of defense.

Open source Twitter, what do you call a human who has the ability to "write" to your project (merge pull requests, create branches, etc.)? What about someone who can't commit, but helps organize issues (adds labels, closes stale issues, etc.)?

Learned last night code I wrote for 7+ years ago was still in use, along with the workflows it brought. Upgraded 20+ versions. A good reminder to build tools with empathy. Take a moment today to fix that long-standing bug. It will pay your users dividends for years to come.

Corporate contributions to the third-party open source projects can still be a source of friction and ambiguity. We're beta testing a new platform-agnostic commit pattern we hope can help you contribute on behalf of your employer. We'd love your thoughts.

Hard to believe that today marks six (6!) years at GitHub. From government to open source to community and safety (and all the amazing people I've met along the way), I can't wait to see what the next six years bring...

Things that are no longer acceptable with your mobile phone: - Allowing your phone ringing audibly - Having a custom ringtone - Leaving a voicemail, if you’re under the age of 40 - Calling someone without scheduling the call in advance, unless it’s an emergency

No more copying and pasting. You can now set organization-wide contributing, issue/PR template, code of conduct, support, etc. files with a specially named .github repo. Feedback appreciated if you have any.

Updated my post on tools to help introduce open source workflows to the uninitiated (Word to Markdown and back, simplified comment forms, redlines, PDFs, etc.). What useful tools/hacks do you use to bridge the gap to more traditional contexts?
