See faster-cpython/ideas#343 . Stats suggest that small ranges are common in several benchmarks.
Microbenchmarks suggest a 10%-40% speedup for small ranges, but a 2-4% slowdown for longer ranges. Maybe PGO decided to be less aggressive about the longer case when the shorter case was added.
Pyperformace got
Geometric mean: 1.01x faster, though my machine is not super stable.
