This looks mostly good to me. A couple of general notes and questions:

  1. Please run the code formatter. That should fix the check failure for the code formatting. The maven command is: mvn com.coveo:fmt-maven-plugin:format
  2. Could you have a look at my comments regarding public vs. package-private visibility? If in any way possible, it would be preferable if we could keep all classes that are not needed by our end users package-private.
  3. I noticed that the com.google.cloud.spanner.it.ITSpannerOptionsTest.testCloseAllThreadsWhenClosingSpanner test failed. Is that a flaky failure, or does it always fail? Because if it always fails, it is an indication that there could be a thread leak somewhere.

@mbril, I think there's a few things missing since the spec was updated after you implemented this change.

  1. Env variable name has changed.
  2. There's a requirement to explicitly handle the PERMISSION_DENIED case.
  3. There are a few unit tests that need to be added based on the various ways this feature can be enabled/disabled.
  4. Two ITs need to be added.

We have decided to implement this functionality on the server side so we no longer need to add this support on the client side.
